Data Storage Tag
(Archival Tag)Data storage tags contain sensors, large memory size, long battery life (up to 5 years) and programming features. Tags are available to record a variety of parameters such as temperature, depth, light, salinity, pressure, pitch and roll, compass and GPS. Data storage tags must be recovered from fish to acquire recorded data. Tags are generally small in size (less than 2 inches) and can be internally or externally attached. Some of the newest archival tags are designed to detach from the host and float to the surface where it then transmits recorded data to researchers. These "Pop-up" tags are large (2.1cmx17.5cm) and used for large pelagic fish and marine mammals.
Advantages:
- An enormous amount of data can be obtained from a single recovered data storage tag
Disadvantages:
- Cost of tags and applying tags is expensive
- Return of tags are usually dependent on voluntary recovery and reporting of tags by fishermen and processors
- Should be accompanied by an educational outreach campaign and possibly rewards
